Due to the afore mentioned aggressive art market as well at the professionalism of all aspects of the art world, art schools have been thrust into a position of prominence. With art being created for spectacle and capitalization, mere talent isn't enough to catapult an artist into the spotlight. The artworld has always been a business, but when did making money and notoriety become the motivation to make art? To whom are the art schools responsible? Let's be honest, artists make art because they can't not do it, but most of us would love validation and acknowledgement for our talent. Nothing screams that better than a sold work. But how do you make a great work of art if you're only thinking about what new contacts you're making via the most reputable school with a power staff/board of directors with connections to the galleries and museums that hold your fate in their hands? Or can you attend one of the emergent DIY schools who seem to focus primarily on creativity with a side of networking with your colleagues and preparing to enter a professional market place? Or can you just hide out in your studio making art to your heart's content, sending images out into the world and hope upon hope that someone in the ruthless artworld actually recognizes talent when they see and want to promote it for the purity of art's sake? God I hope so.
