How Do You Like Me Now?
Mar-14-2009 12:00 AM

As with everything these days, the previously hyper art market has evaporated. And in copycat style of the stock market, if you are liquid, this is a golden opportunity to buy. Some museum's most prized works were acquired during the Depression. It may be time to upgrade the quailty level of your collection or get in the game for the first time. The phenomenon of an artist's supersonic rise to must have status followed by an equally rapid plummet back into obscurity has passed. It's a great time to look into previously under valued artists that were overlooked during the art stampede. Additionally, difficult times tend to inspire art to contain a depth it doesn't possess when art is being cranked out to feed a buying frenzy. There was no time to nurture the inner mad scientist cloistered in her studio stretching the limits of imagination and ingenuity. There will always be a place for the spectacle of art, but now it may be really good art in lieu of a shameless grab for attention, cash prizes included. If you are an established collector or a wannabe, it's time to indulge the obsession. Buy art because you love it and it will always be valuable no matter what the market says. This a chance, however, to score an undiscovered painter who hasn't recieved his deserved props yet or a bargain on coveted works. Of course, I always encourage patronage of your local art makers, but anywhere you hunt for the big game you're sure to wind up with quite a kill to add to your collection.
